Caballones Channel
Jardines de la Reina · Cuba
Caballones Channel cuts through the northern edge of the Jardines de la Reina archipelago and is the primary entry corridor for the liveaboard fleet — and one of the most productive dives in the park. The channel floor at 15 to 20 m is a mosaic of hard coral bommies, sand flats, and seagrass beds, and it is here that the resident American crocodile population is most reliably encountered. Individuals up to 3 m have been documented resting motionless on the sand between coral heads and are fully habituated to diver presence. Sea turtles are so abundant in the channel that it is common to count more than ten individuals on a single dive. The channel walls support schools of horse-eye jacks and great barracuda in permanent residence.
