Underwater at La Madeleine Wall

La Madeleine Wall

Dive site

The outer western face of Île de la Madeleine drops from 6 metres to over 40 metres in a sheer volcanic wall draped with orange and purple gorgonian sea fans, black coral trees, and large sponge colonies. The wall marks the boundary between the warm lagoon and cold Atlantic upwelling, creating a thermocline that attracts pelagic species. Green and hawksbill turtles rest on ledges throughout the dive, and moray eels, lionfish, and large spotted grouper occupy every crack. The upper reef plateau is ideal for safety stops in a coral garden of unusual Atlantic density.
