Shark Cathedral
Darwin Island · Ecuador
A dramatic submerged amphitheatre of collapsed basalt columns on Darwin's south flank creates a natural arena at 22 to 38 m. The stacked rock ledges and overhangs shelter white-tip reef sharks resting in groups of 10 to 30 during daylight hours, while the open water above fills with hammerheads and Galápagos sharks. Mola mola appear seasonally (July through October) drifting near the outer lip. The protected geometry of the site dampens current to mild even when the surrounding ocean is running strong, making it a reliable second dive when conditions elsewhere at Darwin are too punishing.
