Amphora Shallows
Dive site
A broad sandy terrace between 4 and 18 metres depth that holds one of the eastern Mediterranean's most accessible ancient amphora fields. Roman-era transport amphorae — some intact, many broken into recognisable sherds — lie scattered across coarse sand between posidonia patches, the remnants of coastal trading vessels that foundered in storms over two millennia ago. Octopus colonise the larger intact vessels and will investigate divers curiously. Dusky grouper hover at the posidonia edge. The site is fully exposed to light throughout the day, making photography conditions excellent. Snorkellers can observe amphora from the surface in the shallower sections. The historical density is comparable to sites in Turkish or Greek waters but with zero other divers.
