Underwater at Ras al Hillal Wall

Ras al Hillal Wall

Dive site

West of Derna near the headland of Ras al Hillal, a continuous limestone wall drops from 3 metres at the surface to beyond 45 metres, its face encrusted with red and yellow gorgonian sea fans, sponge colonies, and a resident population of large moray eels. The wall faces north and holds shadow from midday onward, which concentrates nudibranchs and filter feeders on its cooler faces. Amberjack and dentex patrol the blue water off the wall edge. Deepwater scorpionfish sit motionless on ledges at 30 metres. The site has never appeared in any dive publication and receives essentially no visitors — fish behaviour is correspondingly relaxed and approachable.
