Large individuals occupy the engine rooms and cavities of the sunken hulls, emerging at night to hunt crustaceans and sleeping fish on the reef flat. The artificial structures have created ideal ambush habitat, and several individuals have been resident for years, recognisable by scar patterns. They are important reef predators that help regulate populations of small bony fish and octopus.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
