Mainit Muck
Dumaguete · Philippines
Mainit — meaning 'hot' in Visayan — takes its name from geothermal vents that bubble warm sulphurous water through the black sand at depth, creating a unique microenvironment that attracts critters rarely found in the more famous Dauin sites to the north. The vent areas at 18 to 28 metres support unusual colour morphs of frogfish and scorpionfish apparently drawn by the warmer substrate, and the site is one of the most reliable locations in the Philippines for the elusive Sargassum ghost pipefish, which drifts in loose mimicry of floating weed fragments in the 15 to 20 metre zone. The shallower rubble terrace concentrates flamboyant cuttlefish, wonderpus octopus, and endemic Bargibant's pygmy seahorses on scattered sea fans, making Mainit a top pick for macro photographers seeking rarer finds away from the crowds.
