Schools of bumphead parrotfish — some individuals exceeding a metre — graze along Sumilon's reef crest at dawn, scraping coral with their fused beak-like teeth and excreting the calcium carbonate as fine white sand. Their crunching feeding sounds carry underwater for dozens of metres, and dawn dives offer the best chance of intercepting the school before it disperses into deeper water.

Bumphead Parrotfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
