Pelagic thresher sharks visit Sumilon's deeper outer slopes during cooler months when upwellings push cold nutrient-rich water toward the surface, and are occasionally seen by divers on early-morning dives along the wall. They are shy animals that typically cruise at the edge of visibility but are unmistakable for their dramatically elongated upper caudal fin lobe, which they use to stun prey.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
