Spiny Lobster

Panulirus pascuensis

Sighting evidence at Ana Kai Tangata, Easter Island

The Easter Island spiny lobster is an endemic species found only in Rapa Nui and Sala y Gomez island waters, sheltering in the crevices and overhangs of the Ana Kai Tangata cave system during the day. They emerge at night to forage over the reef, and their antennae are often visible protruding from crevices during daytime dives. Their endemism underscores how profoundly Easter Island's isolation has shaped its marine biodiversity at every trophic level.

Spiny Lobster is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
