Hanga Roa Harbour Wrecks
Easter Island · Chile
The harbour at Hanga Roa holds several deliberately scuttled vessels and an old anchor field from colonial trading ships, resting in 15 to 30 metres on volcanic rubble and sand. Coral encrustation has transformed the hulls into artificial reefs thick with endemic chromis and damselfish. Moray eels of unusual size are habituated to divers, and at night the wrecks come alive with lobsters, crabs, and hunting octopuses. An ideal second dive after the exposed outer sites.
