Blue-ringed octopus emerge from the Port Vila Bay substrate after dark, hunting shrimp and small crabs across the open sand and rubble with their iridescent blue rings quiescent until disturbed. Their venom is among the most potent in the animal kingdom — enough to kill an adult human — but encounters on guided dives are managed to prevent any contact. The bay's protected, shallow conditions and soft substrate make it ideal habitat for this species, and confident local guides can locate multiple individuals on a single night dive.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
