Kimon M (Lentil Wreck)

Ras Mohammed · Egypt

German cargo steamer — launched at Stuelcken & Sohn in Hamburg in 1952 as the Brunsbüttel — that drove full ahead onto the northeast corner of Sha'ab Abu Nuhas on the night of 12 December 1978 carrying 4,500 tonnes of bagged lentils bound for India. The cargo soaked, swelled and split the seams; she rolled onto her starboard side with the bow mast at 4 m, the first hold around 16 m and the stern in sand at 32 m. Divers know her as the 'Lentil Wreck.' Resident batfish hang at the propeller and rudder, hunting trevally sweep the empty holds, and glassfish, lionfish and giant morays work the broken midsection. Deepest and most current‑swept of the four famous Abu Nuhas wrecks, sitting on the windward side where the Strait of Gubal pushes hardest.

  • For this site

    • Primary plus backup torch · The engine room, aft superstructure and stern interior are the wreck's highlights and stay dim even in bright surface conditions.
    • SMB · The Kimon M sits on the windward side of Abu Nuhas where currents build through the morning; ascents are often made off the wreck and an SMB is mandatory for a free‑water blue‑water hang.
    • Nitrox · The stern lies at 32 m and the propeller is the signature shot, so a 28–32% mix meaningfully extends bottom time at recreational depths.
