Roque de la Bonanza
El Hierro · Spain
A volcanic pinnacle rising from 35 metres to within 5 metres of the surface off La Restinga's eastern shore, inside the Mar de las Calmas reserve. Atlantic currents sweep around the rock and concentrate schooling amberjack, barracuda, and bream in dense rotating columns. Dusky groupers — some exceeding 1 metre — hold fixed positions along the base. The walls are encrusted with yellow cup corals, red sea fans, and orange sponges. In summer, mobula rays and occasional hammerhead sharks pass through the deep water on the eastern face.
