Dahret Island — Hammerhead Point

Eritrea — Dahlak Archipelago · Eritrea

A submerged seamount off the eastern face of Dahret Island rises to about 18 metres and sits at the intersection of two channel currents, making it a natural aggregation point for pelagic species. Scalloped hammerhead sharks circle the seamount in the early morning, often in groups of 5 to 15 animals. Grey reef sharks patrol the flanks throughout the day. The current that attracts the sharks also piles organic material onto the summit, supporting a dense community of anthias, chromis, and glassfish — which in turn attract barracuda and tuna. This is an advanced dive site: the current can run hard and conditions can change quickly.
