Nokra Island — WWII Italian Wreck

Eritrea — Dahlak Archipelago · Eritrea

Nokra Island was an Italian naval base during the colonial period and several vessels were scuttled or sunk in the surrounding shallows during and after World War II. The main wreck — a mid-sized cargo vessel — rests on its side at 18 to 28 metres, heavily encrusted after eight decades underwater. Coral has colonised every surface: table corals blanket the deck, sea fans hang from the superstructure, and the holds are home to large snapper, lionfish, and octopus. The shallow nature of the wreck makes it accessible to recreational divers without technical equipment while still delivering the eerie atmosphere of intact mid-ship structure and machinery.
