Arctic char enter the brackish shallows of the inner fjord during late summer and autumn, creating a rare opportunity to observe this salmonid underwater in its natural habitat. They move in loose groups along the shoreline and around the pilings, and their iridescent flanks are unmistakable in the clear fjord water. This species is the defining freshwater fish of Iceland and holds cultural significance as an important traditional food source.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
