Northern Gannet

Morus bassanus

Sighting evidence at Enniberg Wall, Faroe Islands

Northern gannets nest on the cliff face directly above Enniberg Wall and dive from heights of up to 30 metres, folding their 2-metre wingspan at the last moment to enter the water at over 90 kilometres per hour. Divers at shallow depths during seabird season — April through August — regularly witness gannets entering the water column in a stream of silver bubbles, manoeuvring underwater with surprising speed and agility before surfacing with a fish. The interaction between the aerial hunters above and the marine world below is one of the defining experiences of diving at Enniberg.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
