Corvo North Wall
Flores and Corvo · Portugal
Corvo is the smallest and most isolated island in the Azores — and in all of the European Union — and its northern underwater wall reflects exactly that remoteness. The site sees almost no diving traffic, and the result is marine life conspicuously unafraid of divers. Atlantic torpedo rays rest on sandy ledges, massive dusky grouper allow close approach, and schools of bogue and chub part around approaching divers rather than fleeing. The wall itself runs north-northwest and catches the Atlantic nutrient current directly, feeding thick gorgonian growth and deep beds of calcareous algae. When conditions allow the crossing from Flores, this is arguably the most pristine dive site in the entire Azores archipelago.
