Ponta da Fajazinha Wall
Flores and Corvo · Portugal
On the western tip of Flores, where the island faces the full force of the open Atlantic, the submarine terrain drops in a near-vertical basalt wall from 6 metres to well beyond sport diving limits. The wall is encrusted with colourful sponges, hydroids, and dense colonies of red and yellow gorgonians that filter nutrients from the passing current. Large schools of Atlantic chub sweep across the face while loggerhead turtles rest in shallow crevices. Barracuda patrol the blue water just off the wall edge, and dusky grouper of impressive size lurk in the deeper sections. The combination of volcanic geology and Atlantic nutrient richness makes this one of the most visually striking walls in the Macaronesian region.
