Bargibant's pygmy seahorses live exclusively on Muricella gorgonian fans, and Maumere's wrecks support dense gorgonian growth that hosts some of the highest densities of these tiny animals found anywhere in Indonesia. Males brood eggs in a pouch visible even at their 2cm adult size, and experienced guides can locate multiple individuals clinging to a single fan. The wrecks' sheltered position within Maumere Bay allows the delicate gorgonians to reach exceptional size, creating ideal habitat.

Pygmy Seahorse is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
