Riung supports one of the largest aggregations of bumphead parrotfish in the Lesser Sunda Islands, with schools of 50 to 100 animals grazing the outer reef crests each morning. The thunderous concussive sounds of their feeding reverberate across the reef and the quantities of white sand they produce through their digestive process visibly contribute to the park's famous white-sand beaches. Seeing this many of the world's largest parrotfish in a single school is an experience available at very few reefs globally.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
