Napoleon wrasse — locally called maming — grow to enormous size in Riung's no-take zones, with individuals exceeding 1.5 meters common enough that divers regularly encounter multiple large males on a single dive. These extraordinarily intelligent fish show curiosity and even apparent recognition of regular dive guides, approaching to within touching distance. Their abundance at Riung is a stark contrast to most Indonesian reefs where they are critically overfished.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
