Bajo del Caballo
Fuerteventura · Spain
Bajo del Caballo is a submerged volcanic ridge off Fuerteventura's northern coast where the interaction of Atlantic trade wind swells and upwelling currents from the African continental shelf creates exceptional pelagic encounters in open blue water that feels genuinely oceanic despite the relatively short boat ride. Hammerhead sharks are recorded seasonally in the deeper passes, while large schools of Atlantic bonito and amberjack orbit the ridge peak in hunting formations that draw in opportunistic seabirds visible from the surface. The ridge itself is colonised by black coral and sea fans at depth, offering a structural backdrop for what is primarily a blue-water spectacle.
