Conger eels reach enormous sizes in the protected waters of the Illas Atlánticas, with specimens exceeding 2 m and 20 kg documented by park researchers. They are nocturnal predators of fish and crustaceans but spend daylight hours coiled in rock crevices, and patient divers can observe multiple individuals at the same dive site.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
