Outer Wall — Taravai
Dive site
The outer barrier reef on the southwestern face of the Gambier atoll drops vertically from 2 metres to beyond 60 metres, forming one of the most pristine and unvisited walls in the Pacific. Hard coral coverage on the upper wall is exceptional, with large table corals and massive Porites colonies that indicate decades of undisturbed growth. Grey reef sharks patrol the wall edge at 20 to 35 metres, and schools of bigeye trevally sweep past in formation. The deep blue offshore water regularly produces encounters with silvertip sharks and passing pelagic species. Strong oceanic swell can make entry and exit challenging on the outer face, and conditions are best between May and November.
