Underwater at Shark Pass — Mangareva

Shark Pass — Mangareva

Dive site

One of several cuts in the barrier reef that allow tidal exchange between the lagoon and the open ocean, this pass concentrates grey reef sharks and blacktip reef sharks at predictable stages of the tidal cycle. On the incoming tide, the sharks face into the current at 12 to 20 metres, hovering in loose aggregations of 15 to 30 individuals. The sandy channel floor is patrolled by marbled stingrays and occasional nurse sharks. The reef walls of the pass are covered in healthy Acropora and Pocillopora corals, and Maori wrasse are common. The pass is diveable year-round but is best from May to November when visibility peaks at 40 metres or beyond.
