Underwater at West Passage Wall

West Passage Wall

German Channel · Palau

A sweeping vertical wall on the western approach to German Channel that drops from 10 meters to beyond recreational limits, draped in enormous sea fans, black coral trees, and barrel sponges. The wall faces open ocean and intercepts strong tidal currents, making it one of the most productive pelagic corridors in Palau. Oceanic whitetip sharks are occasional visitors, and grey reef sharks patrol the wall edge in the permanent thermocline where warm surface water meets the cooler oceanic column.
