Sighting evidence at The Shelf, Gladden Spit

Mutton snapper co-aggregate with cubera snapper at Gladden Spit, their combined spawning creating the nutrient pulse that attracts whale sharks. During non-spawning months they disperse across reef and seagrass habitats but smaller resident groups are visible on the shelf year-round. Their pink-flushed flanks and black lateral spot make them easy to identify underwater.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
