Nassau grouper are a critically endangered species that once formed massive spawning aggregations throughout the Caribbean. The protected status of Gladden Spit has allowed a recovering resident population to establish on the shelf, and solitary individuals are regularly encountered resting under ledges or hovering at cleaning stations. Each encounter is a reminder of how much the species has declined range-wide.
