Humpback whales use the sheltered waters around El Remanso as a nursery ground from July through November, when Southern Hemisphere populations migrate north to breed and calve in Colombia's warm Pacific waters. Snorkelling and diving with humpbacks here is one of few regulated experiences in the Eastern Pacific, with mothers and calves occasionally approaching stationary divers with apparent curiosity. The acoustic experience — hearing whale song resonating through the water column — is reported by divers as one of the most profound encounters in Colombian diving.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
