Green Moray Eel

Gymnothorax castaneus

Sighting evidence at La Moneda, Gorgona Island

The boulder architecture at La Moneda shelters some of the largest green moray eels recorded at Gorgona, with individuals commonly exceeding 1.5 metres and occasionally reaching 2 metres in length. These eels are co-operative hunters that sometimes partner with whitetip reef sharks to flush prey from crevices, a behaviour documented in the Eastern Pacific but rarely observed elsewhere in the world. Divers frequently find two or three large morays occupying the same overhang, a testament to the site's exceptional prey density.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
