El Cañon
Gran Canaria · Spain
El Cañon is a dramatic underwater canyon cut into Gran Canaria's southern submarine slope, descending through a series of volcanic terraces and vertical walls covered in black coral trees and dense fields of gorgonian sea fans that grow to exceptional size in the nutrient-rich upwelling currents. The canyon walls channel Atlantic swells into predictable currents that concentrate large pelagics — schools of amberjack and Atlantic bonito sweep through at speed while stingrays rest in the sandy canyon floor at depth. This is Gran Canaria's best dive for encountering the critically endangered angel shark, which buries itself in the sand patches between canyon walls waiting for passing prey.
