Underwater at Les Hanois Reef

Les Hanois Reef

Dive site

Les Hanois is a chain of exposed granite rocks off Guernsey's southwest tip, guarded by a Victorian lighthouse that has marked one of the English Channel's most dangerous passages for 160 years. Below the surface the rock ridges and surge channels plunge to over 30 metres, their walls packed with dead men's fingers, jewel anemones, and plumose anemones. The Atlantic swell drives strong, nutrient-loaded current that feeds large pollack, coalfish, and grey mullet in mid-water. Spider crabs are abundant in spring. The site demands boat access and a careful weather window — it is exposed and the tidal flow is fierce — but the payoff is one of Guernsey's most dramatic seascapes.
