SS Schleswig

Dive site

The Schleswig is a German cargo steamer requisitioned during the occupation and sunk in 1943, now resting upright in 28 metres off Guernsey's west coast. The wreck is largely intact with the boiler, engine room, and cargo hold all penetrable. Conger eels of over a metre are resident throughout the structure, occupying every available dark recess. The hull is thick with dead men's fingers, plumose anemones, and encrusting sponges. Tidal flow over the wreck is variable; a surface marker buoy is mandatory. One of the best dived wrecks in the Channel Islands.
