Gorgonian Sea Fan

Gorgonia ventalina

Sighting evidence at Ile à Vache, Haiti

Purple and yellow sea fans dominate the walls and slopes of Ile à Vache at depths of 10 to 25 metres, their fan-shaped colonies oriented perpendicular to the prevailing current to maximise particle capture. At full size these colonies can exceed one metre in diameter and host a micro-community of flamingo tongue snails, brittle stars, and pygmy seahorses.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
