Southern stingrays rest and forage in the sandy channels between reef structures around Ile à Vache, excavating pits to expose buried invertebrates and creating microhabitat used by opportunistic small fish. They are most active in the late afternoon and their abundance here reflects the low historical fishing pressure on the island's surrounding waters.
