Symmetrical Brain Coral

Diploria strigosa

Sighting evidence at Les Arcadins, Haiti

Symmetrical brain corals are the dominant structural species on the Les Arcadins reef system, their hemispherical colonies growing only a centimetre or two per year to reach the massive sizes observed here. The grooved surface of each colony provides refuge for cleaning shrimp and small gobies, and the colonies at Les Arcadins are among the largest living examples of this species documented in Haitian waters.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
