Walking Shark Bay
Halmahera · Indonesia
A sheltered bay on Halmahera's eastern coast, Walking Shark Bay is named for the epaulette sharks that literally walk across the reef flat on their pectoral and pelvic fins during low water, hunting trapped fish and crustaceans in pools that other predators cannot access. The bay's shallow rubble and coral garden extends to 15 m where the seabed transitions to a mixed coral and sand plain hosting enormous diversity of cephalopods, crustaceans, and pygmy seahorses. Night dives here are exceptional, revealing a world of behaviour almost invisible by day.
