Abu Nuhas Wrecks
Hurghada · Egypt
Abu Nuhas is a shallow reef that has claimed 4 wrecks over the centuries, earning its grim nickname of the Ship Graveyard. The most visited is the Giannis D, a 100 m Greek cargo vessel that sank in 1983 and now lies broken in two across the reef at 28 m, her cargo holds accessible and her engine room intact. The Carnatic, a Victorian era mail steamer from 1869, is the oldest and most atmospheric: her wooden decks long gone, the iron skeleton colonized by magnificent soft corals in every shade of orange and pink. All 4 wrecks are reachable on a single day trip from Hurghada, and each has its own personality and marine community. This is wreck diving on a grand and historic scale.
