Freus Channel
Ibiza and Formentera · Spain
The narrow strait between Ibiza and Formentera is a natural funnel for Mediterranean currents, creating one of the western Mediterranean's most exhilarating drift dives. Bream, sea bass, and amberjack stack up against the tidal flow while gorgonians lean permanently into the current along the rocky walls. The channel floor is a mosaic of sand channels cutting through posidonia meadow — a UNESCO-listed habitat that sustains the region's extraordinary fish biomass.
