Underwater at Dugong Bay

Dugong Bay

Dive site

Dugong Bay is a sheltered seagrass meadow in the inner reaches of Inhambane Bay, one of the only places in East Africa where dugongs are reliably sighted underwater. The meadow runs from 3 to 12 metres over a gently sloping sand and mud bottom, with dense Thalassia and Cymodocea seagrass beds that sustain the resident dugong population of around 100 individuals. Encounters are unhurried and close; dugongs graze slowly and tolerate calm divers at a few metres. Bottlenose dolphins move through the bay in small pods. This is also a nursery site for juvenile fish including rockcod, batfish, and various wrasse. The dive is calm, shallow, and accessible to beginners; visibility fluctuates with tidal flow.
