Whale Shark Ridge

Dive site

Whale Shark Ridge is a shallow submerged sandstone ridge at 8 to 18 metres that acts as a feeding aggregation zone for whale sharks following the seasonal krill and copepod blooms that build up along the outer reef edge. Juvenile whale sharks 4 to 7 metres dominate from October through January, with larger individuals appearing through March. Humpback whales pass in audible proximity from July through October, sometimes surfacing within sight of the ridge. The reef structure itself carries dense gorgonian fans and sea whips in the channels between ridge sections, and trevally hunt baitfish against the current on incoming tide.
