Whitetip reef sharks rest in the sandy chamber at the base of the blue hole during the day, sometimes stacking two or three animals across the same patch of sand. The enclosed environment makes approach distances short, allowing close observation of resting behaviour including the rare sight of sharks in apparently deep torpor. They exit through the arch at dusk to hunt the outer reef wall, returning reliably before dawn.

Whitetip Reef Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
