Parrotfish are among the primary colonisers of the MUSA sculptures, grazing the algae and soft growth that develops first on the concrete and preparing surfaces for coral recruitment. Their crunching feeding sounds are audible throughout the site, and the bioerosion they produce as they graze contributes directly to the sandy sediment surrounding the sculptures. Supermale phase individuals with their vivid green and pink colouration contrast dramatically against the grey concrete figures.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
