Conger eels are powerful ambush predators that grow to over 2 metres and thrive inside the sheltered structure of shipwrecks. They rest motionless in holds and companionways during daylight, emerging at night to hunt fish and crustaceans. Their muscular bodies and backward-curving teeth make them effective predators; on the Baron Gautsch multiple large individuals occupy permanent territories within the wreck.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
