Gilthead sea bream

Sparus aurata

Sighting evidence at Baron Gautsch, Istria

Schools of gilthead sea bream circle the Baron Gautsch's superstructure, feeding on invertebrates encrusting the hull. The distinctive gold stripe between their eyes gives the species its common name; they are omnivorous and use their strong molar-like teeth to crush molluscs and crustaceans. Their schooling behaviour around wrecks creates photogenic curtains of silver that divers regularly encounter on ascent.
