Coconut Octopus

Amphioctopus marginatus

Sighting evidence at Kumomi, Izu Peninsula

Coconut octopuses at Kumomi exhibit one of the most sophisticated tool-use behaviours documented in invertebrates, collecting discarded bivalve shells and coconut husks and carrying them for later use as portable shelters. They are highly intelligent foragers, and their den locations — marked by shell middens — can be tracked reliably across multiple dive sessions.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
