Yoda's painted frogfish rank among the most photographed subjects in Izu, capable of shifting colour from white to yellow, orange, or mottled brown to match the sponges they inhabit. They walk along the seafloor on pectoral fins modified into limb-like appendages, a primitive locomotion style that reflects frogfish's ancient lineage.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
