Underwater at Whale Shark Corridor

Whale Shark Corridor

Kalpitiya · Sri Lanka

A deep-water channel 5 to 8 km offshore where whale sharks aggregate in numbers that rival any site in the Indian Ocean from January through March, drawn by massive blooms of copepods and fish spawn that collect along a persistent thermocline boundary. Groups of 3 to 15 individual whale sharks feeding at the surface simultaneously have been documented here — an encounter density exceptional even by global standards. The site requires a 45-minute boat ride in open ocean swells, but the reward can be one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Asia.
